The Public Policy Committee is where advocacy becomes action. This committee focuses on state and federal legislation that affects the lives of people with disabilities and works to ensure that policy decisions reflect the voices and experiences of self advocates. Members help shape SAM’s policy priorities and engage with lawmakers, public agencies, and community partners on issues that matter.
What the Public Policy Committee Does
Members review proposed laws, track key legislative developments, and analyze policy changes that may impact people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Michigan. The committee also helps prepare members for advocacy meetings with legislators and their staff, including virtual conversations that allow SAM members from across the state to participate.
By doing this work, the Public Policy Committee strengthens SAM’s ability to protect rights, promote inclusion, and champion public policies that support full participation in community life.
